개인의 감정이나 사상 등을 남에게 전달하는 방법에는 여러 가지 표현 형식들이 있다. 색채나 형태 등 조형언어를 통해 시각화하는 미술의 양식이 있고 몸짓이나 동작을 이용한 동적인 양식, 그리고 음이나 말을 이용한 청각적 방법들도 있다. 특히 예술작업을 하는 사람들은 자기들의 내면세계를 이러한 표현 방법들을 동원해 어떤 질서 속에서 끊임없는 창작실험과 연구를 해 나아간다. 현대의 예술작업은 작가의 동일한 내면세계를 표현하더라도 그 표현방법에 따라 전달되는 메시지가 우리에게 각기 다르게 비쳐지기도 한다. 그래서 작가들의 표현방법이 대단히 중요하고 따라서 새로운 표현방식이나 재료 또는 기법들로 창작된 작품들이 신선한 느낌을 주게도 되고 또 주목을 받게도 된다. 이번에 패션 일러스트레이션 작품전을 갖는 노윤선 교수는 20세기 큐비즘 이후 현대미술에 많은 영향을 끼친 꼴라쥬(collage) 기법을 동원해 작가의 패션의 이미지를 전달하고 있다.
패션 일러스트레이션은 14세기말 목판화에 의해 복사본으로 간해된 것을 시작으로 하여 그동안 여러 표현기법들을 통해 패턴북이나 정보전달을 위해 그리고 선전이나 광고 또는 삽화용으로 제작되어왔다. 그러나 이번에 노윤선 교수는 현대에서 추구되고 있는 장식을 목적으로 하는 패션 일러스트레이션 작품을 보여주게 된다. 그것은 포토몽타쥬, 잡지, 실, 섬유 금속, 합성수지. 가죽 등 다양한 소재들을 꼴라쥬 기법을 통해 시각적 질감과 촉각적 질감을 예리한 방법으로 조립시키고 있다.
이것은 표면에서 입체적 공간감을 느끼게 하고 아크릴물감, 젤미디움(gel medium), 임파스토 미디움(impasto medium), 프린팅젤(printing gel) 등을 사용하여 작가의 상상의 세계를 전달하는데 예술적 가치를 높여주고 있다. 이번 패션 일러스트레이션의 꼴라쥬는 사실적 형상과 추상적 형상을 대담한 회화적 감각으로 정리시켜 이질적 요소들의 어색함을 감추어 주고 있다. 예술가들은 그들의 육안으로 볼 수 없는 내면의 세계를 조형언어를 통해 우리에게 던져주고 그것을 통해 많은 사람들은 다른 사람의 정신세계와 만나게 된다. 빠르게 변해가는 패션의 다양한 분야에서 예술적 가치를 창출할 수 있는 장식을 목적으로 하는 표현의 세계가 이번 작품전에서 강하게 느껴온다.
학부시절을 외국에서 보낸 노윤선 교수의 작품들은 서구적 감각이 물씬 풍겨오고 대담한 구도의 처리와 강인하게 느껴지는 화면의 섬세한 패션의 이미지와 대조를 이룬다. 고도의 예리한 조형미를 추구하는 현대패션분야에서 패션을 예술로 이끌어 갈 수 있는 선구자적 역할이 되어지길 바란다.

On Youn-Sun Roh‘s Fashion Illustration Exhibition
There are many methods of expressing one`s feelings or thoughts. Visual methods through modeling of color and shape, dynamic methods though gesture and motion, and auditory methods through tones and words. Artists express their inner world using these methods of expression and endlessly perform creative experiments and researches under certain orders. In modern art work, an artist`s inner world could be reflected to us in different ways through different expression methods, new materials or new techniques give us fresh feelings and attract our attention. professor Youn-Sun Roh, through this exhibition, is expressing her fashion image using the Collage techniques, which gave a great impact on post Cubism modern art in the 20th century.
Fashion Illustration has been used in pattern books, advertisements, and illustrations for the purpose of relaying intelligence, ever since it applied wood-block printing in the 14th century. This time, Professor Youn-Sun Roh is showing us Fashion Illustration that connects with modern pursuit of ornamenting. Visual expressions and tactual expressions are combined using the collage method with photo montages, magazines, thread, textile, metal, plastics and leather. This give a cubic sense on the surface, and the artist`s imaginary world is delivered at a higher value by using acrylic paint, gel medium, impasto medium, and printing gel. The collage used in these Fashion Illustrations arrange the realistic shape and abstract shape in a fine-art like sense to hide heterogeneity. Artists show us invisible inner worlds through modeling language and let us meet spiritual worlds of others. A world of fine-art like expressions can be found within the rapidly changing field of fashion through this exhibition.
Professor Youn-Sun Roh, who studies abroad during her under graduate studies, uses daring compositions and treatment with a strong western taste. This makes a good contrast with the delicate image that fashion has. It is my hope that professor Youn-Sun Roh, through this exhibition, will become a pioneer in bringing fashion up to the level of art in the modern fashion world, which pursues a high level of sharpness and formative beauty.
